Introduction
The project site was originally an old water purification plant dating back to the 1960s, supplying industrial water to companies located in the Guro Industrial Complex (now known as the G-Valley, Seoul Digital National Industrial Complex). However, in 2005, the supply of industrial water was discontinued, leading to the closure of the facility. Subsequently, in response to the changing demands of the evolving Seoul Digital National Industrial Complex and the need for modernization, the site was selected as a target for structural redevelopment. The development plan for the site was initiated through a public announcement for proposals from private companies, marking a transition in the site's purpose and function to align with the contemporary requirements of the Seoul Digital National Industrial Complex. G-Tower aimed to create a space for regional communication by planning internal and external connectivity pathways that would bridge the severed pedestrian routes due to the presence of the former water purification plant site. This design strategy sought to facilitate interaction and connectivity between the north and south as well as the east and west regions within the area, promoting a sense of community and cohesion among the local residents. The design also prioritized the creation of extensive green spaces through the maximization of open ground spaces on the ground level, offering local residents a place for relaxation and cultural activities. Additionally, in response to the lack of facilities in the G-Valley area, plans were made for public facilities such as a convention center, sports center, and a game museum, aiming to activate the local commercial district and promote synergy with the surrounding areas, contributing to the overall development of the region. Therefore, the new G-Tower, situated on the former water purification plant site, is expected to become a landmark in Guro, serving as both a local attraction and a multifunctional cultural space that is cherished by the local residents.
