Introduction: The Busan International Film Festival initiated a project in response to the growing international prominence since its establishment as South Korea's first international film festival in 1996. In 2005, through an international competition, Coop Himmelb(l)au was selected, and Heerim led the joint venture for the design development and construction documentation. The Film Center comprises three dedicated screening theaters, a cinematheque, a multipurpose performance hall, an outdoor screening venue, a film academy, and office spaces, forming a multifunctional cultural space for audio-visual performances. The design concept features a cityscape integrating a flat urban natural landscape with undulating terrain, creating valleys within the urban setting with hills and peaks. Various functional plazas are strategically and organically arranged in between. Symbolic structures, the Big Loop and Small Loop, directly connect to the open plaza accessible from all directions and are designed to accommodate outdoor screenings even in unfavorable weather conditions. Notably, the Big Loop, a colossal 165m-long truss structure with an 85m-long cantilever, has been recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records.
