Gadeokdo New Airport

Design
Introduction
Creating a new leap forward and a future for Busan and the southern region of Korea, the main concept of Gadeokdo New Airport is Rising Wings. The design direction of the passenger terminal was to create a passenger-friendly environment where art and greenery co-exist, applying various eco-friendly elements simultaneously to achieve a carbon-neutral airport. This goal is achieved by incorporating natural light through a gracefully curved ceiling and creating various green spaces that blend with artwork, resulting in an eco-friendly ‘Art-Port’. In addition, not just passive design but also active design, including high-efficiency systems, was implemented in the right places to optimize energy management. Notably, optimizing aircraft movement routes reduced ground operation distances by an average of 500 meters compared to the initial plan, significantly decreasing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The most important focus in the design of the Gadeokdo New Airport was economic efficiency and effectiveness. To ensure safety and reduce construction costs and time, the baggage handling system was strategically placed on the ground floor, eliminating the need for a basement level. This is to prevent damage from tsunamis or typhoons, considering that Gadeokdo New Airport is being built on the seashore. In this way, not only the functional aspect of the airport but also the design identity was established to create a brand, and the construction stage was planned to enable realistic and economical construction. The Gadeokdo New Airport will be a new iconic image representing the southeastern region, and an eco-friendly airport that combines art and greenery, setting an international standard for future airports.
