- Introduction
- Keimyung University Daegu Dongsan Hospital is a former branch of Dongsan Medical Center, which was founded in 1899 with the establishment of Jejungwon (First Western-style hospital). After the main hosptial’s relocation to Seongseo campus in 2019, it marked its 5th anniversary this year since reopening as a general hospital in its original location in Dongsan-dong, Jung-gu. The hospital is undergoing a major project to create a patient-centered smart hospital by improving its aging facilities and outdated clinical processes. In 2022, Heerim completed the master plan for Daegu Dongsan Hospital and proposed phased development plan for next-generation patient-centered hospital. In line with the plan, Heerim has been commissioned to design a new hospital in June 2024 and funeral hall in August. New hospital has 21,500m2 of G.F.A with 9 floors above and 2 underground, and 329 beds. It reinterprets the traditions and historical elements of Dongsan to a modern design language, introducing itself as a pioneering next-generation patient-centered hospital model within an evolving healthcare environment. The concept of a “Medical Block” is applied to efficiently design medical space while being equipped for accommodating future expansions. Moreover, the funeral hall has 5,800m2 of G.F.A with 2 floors above and 2 underground, and 8 rooms. It offers new standard of future funeral halls and designed to cater to the needs of the deceased, families, and visitors, ensuring a high-quality, personalized experience. Both the new hospital and the funeral hall features greenery and relaxation areas, which are interconnected with Cheongna Hill. This is to establish a green medical complex and an urban biophilic hospital district within the city. The red bricks were used as exterior, a symbol of Keimyung University, and the beautiful brick facade connecting the national Cultural Heritage buildings, Jejungwan, New Hospital, drop-off zone, and the funeral hall, embodies the identity of Daegu Dongsan Hospital. This will become a new landmark along Dalseong-ro and is expected to serve as a healing space for patients, medical staffs, visitors, and the local community.
