- Introduction
- In a significant step towards transforming Yeouido Park into a cultural haven, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced the selection of Heerim as one of the final five teams in the 2nd Sejong Performing Art Center Design Competition. Yeouido Park, nestled along the Han River, has long been a symbol of Seoul's natural beauty. However, it has faced challenges in its accessibility due to the disconnection between the park and the urban landscape, making it less accessible for citizens to fully enjoy its offerings. Additionally, the project site also exists as a separate entity, with wide roads and level disparities causing a disconnect between Han River Park and Yeouido Park. To address these challenges, Heerim proposed an ambitious vision that aims to seamlessly integrate Yeouido Park and the Han River Park into a unified cultural center under the banner of the 2nd SEJONG PERFORMING ART CENTER. The proposed cultural center includes two distinct performance venues, connected by a deck that seamlessly links Yeouido Park and the Han River Park, fostering a natural flow between these two spaces. Moreover, under the city-scale roof, smaller structures have been meticulously designed to blend naturally into the urban landscape, offering a micro-scale presence that harmonizes with daily life. To expand public accessibility, Heerim has drawn inspiration from traditional architecture, incorporating spaces under eaves and courtyards, blending the boundaries of the city and nature to create a space where nature, people, and cultural activities can coexist and communicate. The deck, which connects around the waterfront area, is planned to be the central point of the complex, facilitating three-dimensional connectivity and serving as the core that links the park and the Han River. Through these innovative concepts, the 2nd SEJONG PERFORMING ART CENTER aspires to become a symbol of the Great Han River, connecting Yeouido and the Han River while representing our cultural heritage within its low-rise architectural form.
