- Introduction
- The HPPK Korea R&D Center is grasping attention as a transportation hub due to its adjacency to highway intersections and location in a well-developed traffic network connecting to Seoul and surrounding metropolitan areas―Pangyo. In addition, major administrative institutions such as Sejong Research Center, Godeung-dong and Siheung-dong Administrative Welfare Centers, and Seongnam City Hall are located nearby while housing complexes and retail facilities are easily accessible being close to Godeung Public Housing District. Based on these site analyses, various functions of an R&D center were considered as key factors, and the solution to the complex process of collaboration and research within the center was presented as one single design. In addition, sustainable and eco-friendly design that can grant HP corporate’s identity was also considered. As for the design concept, inspired by ‘white paper,’ specifically the state of pure white paper right before being transformed into a document, photo, painting, or 3D object with HP’s world’s best printing technology was taken as the design motif. In the upper part, the curtain wall glass exterior was designed by introducing Korean art techniques: applying traditional Korean paper(Hanji) and ink painting techniques. Because the lower part is in close contact with nature and is difficult to maintain efficiently due to high foot traffic, ‘terracotta’, which is strong against corrosion and impact yet easy to manage, is applied for practical purposes while extruding a luxurious vibe at the same time. HPPK Korea R&D Center in Godeung-dong will advance state-of-the-art technology and become the starting point and core in further developing the printing industry of the future.
