-
The Nanjing Jiangning District Civic Center is part of the project under the brand "Culture Kangnyeong," aimed at developing the Kangnyeong district in Nanjing, China, into an international green city and a historical and cultural city. The Civic Center is envisioned to become a new urban landmark in Nanjing, contributing to the formation of a fresh image for Kangnyeong. The primary focus during the planning of the Civic Center was to express the unique regional characteristics of Nanjing and the longstanding cultural energy it possesses. Drawing inspiration from Nanjing's geographical features that resemble a dragon lying at ease and the deep cultural and historical energy dating back to the Three Kingdoms period, the design aimed to create an overall dynamic and innovative space. To foster an open space for citizens, the site was expanded into the entire park, and the Civic Center was integrated as part of the park. Forming a single mass, an atrium was placed at its center, with Civic and Culture programs arranged on both sides, allowing for a natural division of pathways based on visitors' purposes. The atrium serves as a multi-purpose space connecting Civic and Culture programs, providing a pleasant indoor environment by bringing nature indoors. The central concert hall is designed in the shape of the plum blossom, a symbol of Nanjing, and illuminated with landscape lighting through the double-skin system, creating a spectacular ambiance as a cultural facility. Perforated metal on the outer layer of the double-skin system is used to depict the image of plum blossom leaves fluttering in the wind. For the exterior design suited to the dynamic and organic mass, a patterned facade with adjustable density was created. This facade, analyzed for the direction and angle of the sun, was designed to be an environmentally friendly and smart facade, enabling energy savings.
