Introduction
The construction of Qingdao New International Airport located in Jiaozhou Shi, Qingdao, China is under active progress aiming for its grand opening due in 2019. This new airport is massive in its size accommodating 16 international and 57 domestic gates with 450,000㎡ of GFA in 5F/B1F building scope. Upon selected as the winner of its international design competition in 2015 and winning of its successive tender in 2016, Heerim is currently progressing with schematic and detailed design stage in consortium with Sichuan Architecture Limited Sichuan Wangai Architects Co.,LTD. Based on its in-depth expertise and accumulated experience from Incheon Int’l Airport, Jeju Int’l Airport and more, Heerim proposed all-embracing interior settings for the Qingdao New International Airport to fulfill its vision of becoming the new hub airport of North-east Asia. The concept of Haejimong - “Dream of Sea”, inspired by the regional characteristics of Qingdao being the largest marine city of China, is seamlessly embodied throughout the interior spaces of the airport. The welcoming ambience created by the large skylight above the ticketing hall incarnates the image of “Floating Island” that evokes a compelling sense of place to the travelers and visitors. Moreover, the central retail area intermingled with the vast interior gardens stimulates dynamic commercial activities as the unique leading experience of this airport. Highlighted with these distinguished efforts, Qingdao International Airport is expected to become a new landmark of Northeast region as a gateway into Qingdao of China.
